Case Study: Bede — Keeping Doors Open, Thinking Long-Term, and Choosing the Right College Tennis Fit
Some players are defined by rankings. Others by trophies.
Bede stands out because of how clearly he's thinking about his future—on and off the court.
Originally from New Zealand, Bede is a high-level player with a strong high-9 UTR, knocking on the door of a 10. From the start, his goals were refreshingly balanced. He wanted to attend a great business school in the United States, continue improving his tennis, and place himself in an environment where multiple futures remained possible. Whether that ultimately meant stepping into the professional world after graduation or pursuing tennis at the next level, Bede wanted options—and he wanted to be intentional about how he got there.
Based on his academic profile, budget, and tennis level, the smartest targets were NAIA or Division II programs. These pathways offered the right mix of competitive tennis, strong academics, and realistic financial planning. From there, the focus became finding a school that didn't just check boxes, but truly fit Bede's ambitions.
We spoke with a number of programs, but one opportunity quickly rose above the rest.
Texas Wesleyan University stood out on every level. Located just minutes from Dallas, the school offered exactly what Bede was looking for: access to a major business hub, real post-graduation career opportunities, and a tennis program on the rise. The coaching situation made the choice even clearer. The head coach, formerly at Dallas Baptist, is deeply invested in building something special—developing players properly and creating a competitive, forward-thinking culture.
From the first conversation, the interest was mutual. The coach immediately saw Bede's potential and knew he wanted him as part of the program. For Bede, the appeal was obvious: high-level coaching, a growing program where he can make an impact, and proximity to a major city filled with internships, networking, and job opportunities.
This wasn't about choosing the biggest name or the flashiest option.
It was about choosing the right environment.
At Texas Wesleyan, Bede will have the chance to continue developing as a player while earning a strong business education—all in a setting that keeps both professional tennis and corporate career paths firmly on the table. It's a decision rooted in long-term thinking, not short-term pressure.
Stories like Bede's highlight why there is no single "correct" route in college tennis. With the right information, access to coaches, and a clear understanding of priorities, players can make decisions that truly serve their future.
We're excited to see what's next for Bede. His journey is a great example of how smart planning, flexibility, and the right fit can create opportunities that extend far beyond the court.
