Case Study: Herky Briggs — Late Start, Big Talent, and an Even Bigger Work Ethic: Committing to Anderson University
Some players are born into tennis. Others find it later—and make up ground faster than anyone expects. Herky Briggs is the perfect example of the second type. Originally from Washington, Herky made a bold decision early in his development: he moved to Clearwater, Florida to train full-time and elevate his game. And it paid off. Despite starting tennis at 12 or 13—much later than most high-level juniors—his progress has been nothing short of remarkable.
Herky is one of the hardest workers we've seen. His discipline, attitude, and effort quickly separated him from other players, and in a short period of time he climbed his way to nearly a 9 UTR. Combine that with strong academics and a mature, team-focused personality, and it became clear why coaches consistently had great things to say about him.
From the start, we knew Herky had options.
Because of his academic strength, we explored high-level Division III programs where he could thrive both on court and in the classroom. But Herky's tennis ceiling is high, and we also considered select Division II programs where he could grow, develop, and eventually earn a lineup spot as he continued improving. His blend of potential, character, and work ethic made him a player any coach would want around their team culture.
We spoke to numerous Division III schools and several Division II programs. Herky visited teams, met coaches, and kept an open mind throughout the process. But then everything aligned.
The connection with Anderson University in South Carolina felt different. Their coach showed genuine warmth, sincerity, and belief in Herky's long-term development. The visit went incredibly well—the environment was welcoming, the team culture was strong, and Herky felt understood not just as a player, but as a person. Even though he had positive experiences with some Division III schools, this one stood out immediately.
And there was an added bonus: his best friend was also heading to Anderson. The idea of sharing that next chapter together made the decision feel even more natural.
From that moment, the path became clear. Anderson University was the right fit—athletically, academically, and personally.
We're thrilled to announce that Herky is officially committing to Anderson University, where he'll continue building on the incredible momentum he's already created. With his drive, character, and upward trajectory, there's no question he's going to make a major impact in the years ahead.
This next chapter is just beginning—and we couldn't be more excited for him.
