Marcos Lee Chan Baratau isn't your average college tennis recruit. Hailing from Ecuador, Marcos already had 5 ATP points, represented his country in the Davis Cup, and competed against some of the best players in the world. He spent nearly a year and a half on tour, gaining experience and maturity beyond his years.
But after thoughtful conversations with his family, Marcos made a strategic decision: it was time to pivot toward college tennis. The goal? Develop further, get a quality education, and come back stronger to the pro circuit after four years.
There was just one catch—it was already late in the recruiting cycle. With the Fall 2025 season only 4-5 months away, time was not on our side. Rosters were filling fast, and many top programs had already allocated their scholarships. We moved quickly, setting up high-level calls with schools that still had room for a player of Marcos's caliber.
We had a few promising conversations, but either the scholarship offer wasn't enough, or the spot vanished before a decision could be made. It was getting dicey.

Coach John Collins had just taken over as head coach at the University of North Florida (UNF). He was on a mission to rebuild the program, and he needed one last piece to complete his squad. That piece, he believed, was Marcos.
The call between Marcos and Coach Collins was a turning point. Coach Collins laid out his vision for the team, explained how Marcos would play a key role, and detailed a plan for helping him grow as a player and future pro.
And then came the best part—UNF offered an incredible scholarship.
Everything aligned. The timing. The opportunity. The belief in Marcos's future.
Just like that, Marcos committed to UNF. He's now gearing up to play for a rising Division I program while continuing to chase his professional goals with the full support of a team that believes in him.
