Case Study: Timmy Phung – A New Chapter, Right at Home: Committing to New College of Florida
Timmy Phung has always had that special flair on the court. Known for his smooth, free-flowing game and signature one-handed backhand, he was one of those rare players who made the sport look effortless. Growing up in Sarasota, Florida, Timmy had his sights set high—and early on, he made the bold decision to bypass college and pursue a professional tennis career.
While competing on the pro circuit, Timmy simultaneously took courses online through State College of Florida. But like many athletes chasing greatness, his path wasn't without adversity. A mix of injuries and personal hardships forced him to re-evaluate his future. At 21 years old, with his love for the game still burning strong, Timmy made a powerful decision: it was time to embrace college tennis.
That's when he came to us at Recruited.
Due to eligibility constraints, the NAIA route was the clear path forward. Fortunately, we didn't have to search far. New College of Florida, located right in Timmy's hometown, was building an exciting new tennis program launching in Fall 2025—complete with brand-new facilities and a strong commitment to competitive growth. The timing was perfect, and so was the fit.
As a high-UTR player with pro experience, Timmy immediately became a top target for the coaching staff. And for Timmy, it meant staying close to family, continuing his education, and joining a program on the rise. It checked every box.
Timmy officially committed to New College of Florida, where he'll lead the team into its first season. It's a comeback story with purpose—rooted in maturity, resilience, and rediscovered passion.
The next chapter starts now, and it's right at home.
